What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI has evolved significantly in the present day, but creating an artificially intelligent system wasn’t as simple, and the field has experienced various ups and downs over the years.
History of AI
AI dates back to the 20th century; early research explored topics like symbolic methods and trial and error to develop formal reasoning.
During the second world war, an English mathematician and computer scientist, Alan Turing documented his ideas on creating an intelligent machine. Turing’s test theory proposed that a machine, if capable of engaging in a full conversation with no detectable variances from a human, could be deemed a thinking machine. Turing worked to crack the German military’s encryption, the ‘Enigma’ code.
Later in 1956, American computer scientist John McCarthy organised the Dartmouth Conference, where the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ was first used.
In the 1960s, the US Department of Defence (DARPA) began training machines and computers to simulate basic human reasoning. This work opened the avenues for automation and formal reasoning, including smart search systems and decision support systems that can be designed to complement and augment human abilities.
Today, AI is a much broader term, encompassing technologies from automation to deep learning. The current evolution of AI technologies continues to provide specific benefits in various industries, including healthcare, retail, government, and manufacturing.
Components of AI
A computer exhibits a form of AI when it learns to self-develop and solve problems without human intervention. Advances in technology have greatly progressed AI in terms of hardware, software, and datasets for processing. AI systems and machine learning demand robust hardware, specific software, and extensive datasets (Big Data) to address complex problems and instructions.
Hardware Components to Train AI Models
An AI problem involves a discrete set of data that cannot be easily handled by regular servers alone. A typical server consists of CPU cores, which would take months to process millions of AI threads. AI has evolved significantly, progressing from an 8-bit math performance unit to processing millions of operations per second for training data sets. This requires substantial computing power. With the increasing AI workload, there is a parallel rise in hardware requirements to effectively process these enormous workloads.
Graphical Processing Units (GPUs)
To train AI algorithms, a specific piece of hardware is required, i.e., a graphics processing unit (GPU), which is highly efficient for AI training. The introduction of GPUs in AI operations has significantly reduced processing time. The major reason for the high efficiency of GPUs in AI processing is their suitability for parallel processing. A GPU consists of thousands of cores to process data; a server with only one GPU can easily outperform a powerful server consisting of hundreds of CPUs.
This can be done through standards-based analytics on platforms that can execute all of these processes with standard integrations across the entire platform.
Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) can include a wide range of machines, sensors, smart objects, and unique identifiers (UIDs), provided they are connected to the Internet and have the ability to send and receive data without human intervention. IoT generates a large amount of data from linked devices, which are fed into the AI system to analyse and automate processes using AI models, enabling efficient utilisation of AI.
Software Components to Train AI Models
The goal of an AI system is to learn from data and provide reasons based on input while explaining outputs. AI achieves this with the help of software and decision support for tasks.
Algorithms
Algorithms are developed to process huge amounts of data at multiple stages. This involves identifying and predicting events, understanding processes, and optimising scenarios. Common algorithms used in AI include linear regression, decision trees, logistic regression, and random forest.
Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
APIs are code snippets that allow two software programs to communicate, facilitating the addition of AI functionality to existing products or software packages.
AI Languages
AI development is not confined to a specific language; developers can use various languages such as Python, C++, Java, LISP, and Prolog. There is no hard and fast rule regarding the best programing language for developing artificial intelligence applications.
Database for Training and Running AI Models
AI works by making it possible for machines to learn from experiences and adjust to the responses based on the models and algorithms. AI works at its best when there is vast data – we refer to it as big data. Feeding big data into AI systems presents a lot of cases for AI to make it learn from data, patterns or features to develop intelligent algorithms.
This is no coincidence that indirect end-users are also contributing to the training of AI models. A popular example is the increase in the adoption of social media networks for maintaining and building relations. With enormous data, many of social media sites have setup AI research departments to impart better services to users with image recognition, speech recognition, automated bots, and language translation. This is happening with the processing of data and training AI systems to learn and evolve from human data.
Models of AI
The subsets of AI have expanded over time, enabling machines to use statistical methods and computational neural networks to improve through experiences. AI operates by combining large amounts of data with fast, iterative processing and intelligent algorithms, allowing the software to learn automatically from patterns or features in the data.

Machine learning (ML) uses methods from neural networks, physics, operation research and statistics to explore and identify Insights from data without externally being programmed to search for data and derive conclusions. So, ML is the machine’s ability to learn without external programs.
Computer vision relies on pattern recognition to identify a picture or a video. Machines can process, analyse and understand images in real time and interpret their surroundings. An example of this use case is an image analysis tool which is trained to recognise images of animals, humans, and objects by feeding a large number of images to make it learn. The introduction of algorithms has significantly changed machine recognition patterns.
Natural language processing (NLP) is the capability of machines to analyse, recognise, and interpret human language to respond in the same way, including speech. Machine learning has advanced, enabling it to go through text and identify the sentiment of the writer or classify music to match the mood. NLP is another popular example of machine learning used to understand human verbal or written communication and respond using similar natural methods. The next stage of NLP is natural language interaction, allowing humans to communicate with computers using normal, everyday language to perform tasks.
Deep learning is the next step in neural networks, which increases layers and neuron diversities while churning data through to train models. The ‘deep’ here refers to the enormous layers of neural networks. The capability now exists to expose multi-layered neural networks to extensive datasets.
Neural network is highly inspired by the human brain and the interconnection of neurons. But unlike the human brain where several neurons can connect to each other, software-based neural networks have distinct layers, networks, and commands of data circulation. Neural networks work on a scheme of possibilities. Based on the available data, neural networks make predictions or decisions with a certain degree of certainty with a learning part called a ‘feedback loop’. The feedback loop provides right or wrong information to help the technology in modifying the approach for future results.
Characteristics of an AI system
Artificial Intelligence is created to simplify tasks, reduce errors, improve experiences and help humans by training machines with data based on our experiences and making them learn by introducing various scenarios. Artificial Intelligence is shaping the future and businesses are embracing AI to simplify processes and improve business functions in various fields with smart objects, trained software, chatbots, robots and through other means of human cognitive skills.
The major characteristics of an AI system include:
- Adding intelligence. AI simulates functions of the human brain and embeds them in automated systems, thus imparting human intelligence – an ability to think, understand and act like humans do through systems.
- Interacting with humans. Understand the human language and text and interact with the help of various modes i.e. software, chatbots, NLP etc.
- Engaging in progressive learning. Arranging information in virtual neuron structure so they can make decisions and form concepts, determine a problem’s complexity, and develop a quality of self-improvement by automating manual tasks.
- Achieving accuracy. AI with the help of ML and deep neural networks learn from human and data and keep getting accurate with usage. Image classification and object recognition are common examples where AI has achieved a lot of accuracy.
- Conducting deeper analytics. AI systems analyse the hidden layers of a system and benefit from greater flexibility which was not possible years ago. AI can detect fraud, errors, system flaws, and inaccuracy.
- Using data. AI algorithms are self-learning and data becomes the key to its answers. It creates an advantage for the industry and it’s users to get the maximum out of the collected data.
Industrial Application of AI
The use of AI is significantly changing industries, bringing about a fundamental shift in how businesses function. From manufacturing and energy to healthcare and logistics, AI is reshaping traditional industrial processes.
Its application is focused on improving productivity, predicting maintenance needs, and facilitating intelligent decision-making. This integration of AI is transforming how organisations approach challenges and opportunities in today’s business landscape.
Healthcare. AI applications are opening avenues for personalized healthcare facilities, aiding in surgeries, identifying diseases before they worsen, and providing smart assistants such as life coaches. Systems are also in place to remind individuals to take pills and adopt healthy lifestyle habits.
Retail. AI systems contribute to enhanced retail and virtual shopping experiences by offering personal recommendations, generating personalized offers, providing more purchase options, managing stock, optimizing website layout, and organizing personal preferences based on user data.
Manufacturing. AI is aiding the manufacturing industry in forecasting demand and supply, collecting data through IoT sensors, analyzing data, and learning from existing processes and sequences to manage industrial and production processes effectively.
Banking. AI is enhancing banking operations by reducing manual efforts and increasing automation. This includes identifying user patterns, detecting fraud, scoring credit, handling transactions, and analyzing data to improve overall banking operations.
Challenges around AI
AI is developing and being adopted at a great pace, but there are some concerns among users and researchers that AI could grow immensely.
Privacy. AI programs evolve with a lot of data, and such data can raise privacy concerns if misused and falls into the hands of threat actors. Additionally, AI is now capable of recognising human language and theoretically able to understand and record conversations from personal devices, emails, and telephones. This capability can raise serious concerns if not properly secured.
Ethical concerns. AI systems are replacing humans, and various jobs are being taken over by AI. In areas such as legal, health-tech, and military, AI adoption is increasing, but it can lead to serious consequences if there are errors or failures in the system.
Security. If AI systems are programmed to pose a threat to humans, it would be difficult to stop the system from creating a threat to human safety or leading to unintended consequences.
Generative AI: The Next Chapter in AI Evolution
Generative AI (commonly called Gen AI) is AI that can create new content such as text, images, audio, and other content by recognising patterns in existing data. It has been around since the 1960s and was initially used in chatbots. The technology gained attention in 2014 with the introduction of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), showcasing its ability to generate authentic-looking content.
Generative AI can offer several benefits to businesses and tech users. From content generation to 3D modelling, it provides efficient solutions for automating creative tasks and enhancing productivity. Some of the common Gen AI models include:
• ChatGPT. Built on the GPT architecture, this language model produces text that closely resembles human-generated content. It serves as a valuable tool for research, strategy development, and content creation.
• DALL-E2. This model transforms text prompts into vivid images, allowing creatives to craft vibrant illustrations and concept art. It is a valuable asset in the realm of content marketing.
• GitHub Copilot. In a partnership between GitHub and OpenAI, this tool works as a coding companion, helping developers in writing code more efficiently and intuitively.
